How to Turn an Obsidian Vault Into a Blog

Updated

If you already write in Obsidian, you already have the hard part of a blog: the writing. What is usually missing is a way to get selected notes onto the web without copying them into another tool every time.

This guide turns some of your notes into blog posts with Sentilis Press, while everything else in your vault stays private. It assumes the Sentilis plugin is installed and connected.

Organize posts the way you like

With the plugin, you publish notes one by one, so posts can live anywhere in your vault. Many people keep them in a Blog/ folder to see drafts and published posts at a glance:

vault/
├── Daily notes/ ← private
├── Research/ ← private
└── Blog/
    ├── A year of notes.md
    ├── Weekly note 12.md
    └── attachments/
        └── graph.png

Post settings

Each post starts with a short settings block, which Obsidian shows as the note’s properties:

---
name: A year of notes
slug: a-year-of-notes
category: Essays
tags: notes, writing
status: draft
---
  • name is the post title.
  • slug is the URL. Keep it once the post is live: publishing again with the same slug updates the post.
  • category appears as a label in your post list.
  • tags are lowercase keywords, joined with hyphens when needed (note-taking). Each tag links to a filtered list.
  • status is your workflow: draft, published or archived.

Drafts stay drafts

Write with status: draft until a post is ready — a draft isn’t visible on your site even if you publish it. Change it to published when you want it live, and to archived to take it down without deleting it.

Covers and images

Embed images the way you always do in Obsidian:

![[graph.png]]

The plugin resolves embeds, standard Markdown images and attachments for you. Set a cover in the note’s properties to choose the image shown when the post is shared.

Publish a post

Right-click the note and choose Sentilis → Publish to Press. To update it later, edit the note and publish again from the same menu.

To publish many posts at once — or from a Git repository and CI — use the Sentilis CLI with the folder layout it expects (press/ inside the folder you sync):

sentilis sync ./vault/Public

Beyond posts

The same vault can hold more than a blog. Publish to Bio turns a note into your about page, Publish to Market sells a product or service, and Publish to Gallery shows visual work.
