How to Publish Obsidian Notes as a Website

Updated

Obsidian stores your notes as plain Markdown files in a vault on your computer. That is exactly what makes them easy to publish: the note you wrote can become the page people read, without copying it anywhere.

This guide publishes notes from your vault as a website with the Sentilis plugin for Obsidian. It takes a few minutes and doesn’t involve Git, a build step or hosting.

What you need

  • An Obsidian vault with the notes you want to publish.
  • A Sentilis account — sign up if you don’t have one.
  • The Sentilis plugin for Obsidian.

1. Install the plugin

The plugin is coming soon to the Community Plugins directory. Until then, install it by hand:

  1. Download sentilis.zip from the plugin’s releases on GitHub.
  2. Extract it into your vault’s plugins folder: <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/sentilis/.
  3. In Obsidian, open Settings → Community Plugins and enable Sentilis.

2. Connect your profile

  1. Copy the API token from your Sentilis profile.
  2. Open Settings → Sentilis and add a profile with that token.

If you publish to more than one profile, add each one and switch with the command Sentilis: Change profile.

3. Prepare a note

Add a short settings block at the top of the note. For a post, give it a name, a slug and a status:

---
name: My first post
slug: my-first-post
status: published
---

# My first post

![[cover.png]]

Written in Obsidian, published with Sentilis.

Obsidian shows this block as the note’s properties, so it stays out of your way while you write.

  • name is the title of the page.
  • slug is its URL and its identity: publish again with the same slug and the page is updated instead of duplicated.
  • status can be draft, published or archived. Only published pages are visible.

Embed images the way you always do. The plugin resolves Obsidian embeds like ![[cover.png]], standard Markdown images and attachments automatically.

4. Publish

Right-click the note in the file explorer and choose Sentilis → Publish to Press.

That’s it: the note is now a page on your Sentilis profile. To see and manage what you have published, run the command Sentilis: Open sidebar.

5. Edit and publish again

Change the note in Obsidian and publish it again from the same menu. As long as the slug stays the same, the existing page is updated and keeps its URL. Renaming the title is free; renaming the slug creates a new page.

Beyond posts

The same menu publishes other kinds of pages:

  • Publish to Bio — your profile page.
  • Publish to Market — a product or service, with checkout.
  • Publish to Gallery — a work in a visual portfolio.

Each one expects its own settings; see the plugin guide for what each needs.

Prefer the terminal?

The Sentilis CLI publishes the same Markdown files from the command line, which is handy for publishing many notes at once or from CI:

npm i -g @sentilis/cli
sentilis auth login <your-token>
sentilis sync ./vault/Public

sync expects the Sentilis folder layout — press/, bio/, market/ and so on — inside the folder you point it at.

Common questions

Does the rest of my vault stay private? Yes. Only the notes you publish are sent to Sentilis.

Can I keep using Obsidian Sync or Git? Yes. Sentilis doesn’t change where or how your vault is stored.

How do links between pages work? Inside one entry, link pages by file name. To point at another entry or any other site, use its full https:// address.
